How I Survive Cancer

Through caring for others. I am an RN. Caring for the sick reminds me everyday that everyone faces challenges throughout their life. I am also very spiritual and wrap my faith around me like a blanket. I am fortunate to have a husband, daughter and son with spouses to support me as well as 5 grandchildren who love and support me.

How I Fight for a Cure

I am very vigilant regarding my medical checkups as well as medical screenings. My oncologist orders an Octrea Scan, a CT scan and a 5HIAA urine study on a scheduled basis with an intermittent MRI. I try to stay current, by researching for information related to Carcinoid disease. That is how I found this site. I do not wish an illness on anyone, however, it was wonderful to find a group that understands the disease as well as the emotional roller coaster that one finds themselves riding.

My Caring Words of Encouragement

I encourage everyone to stay in touch with nature, with the religion and/or meditation of their choice. Eliminate those things in life that will increase your stress level. Share with others the negative effect that stress has on carcinoid disease.

Share all information with your physician, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. If you are not satisfied with your physician, inquire about a second opinion. I happen to live in the Pittsburgh area. I was very blessed to be treated by a gastroenterologist who went above and beyond. It was during a routine colonscopy that he noted a few streak marks on the lining of my colon. As he knew I no longer had my appendix, he then went into the ileocecal valve and found the carcinoid tumor. Before I came out of the sedation, he had contacted a surgeon who specialized in bowel procedures, and also taught laproscopic bowel resection procedures nationally and internationally. He also connected me with a very good oncologist. The three of them have worked in sync to assure everyone is on the same page. These services are available! Put yourself first!
